Will my gas boiler convert to hydrogen when it becomes available in the UK?

Gas Boiler

This is a question that a lot of our customers who are purchasing new gas boilers are asking.  It’s understandably a worry to think you may be purchasing an item of such expense that may be obsolete in a short period of time.

In the UK, there’s a plan to transition to hydrogen as a cleaner alternative to natural gas, but your current gas boiler won’t automatically convert to run on hydrogen. The transition will involve a few steps:

Hydrogen-Ready Boilers: Some new boilers are being designed as “hydrogen-ready,” meaning they can be converted to run on hydrogen with a few adjustments or additional components. However, these are different from existing boilers, which may not be easily converted.

We at Gas Safe are effectively installing hydrogen ready appliances.

Retrofitting: If you have an existing boiler, it might require a retrofit to be compatible with hydrogen, but this isn’t always straightforward and might not be practical for all models.

Infrastructure and Availability: The broader adoption of hydrogen heating will also depend on the development of hydrogen infrastructure, such as pipelines and refuelling stations. This transition is expected to take time, so the availability of hydrogen in your area will be a key factor.

Regulations and Incentives: Government policies and incentives will play a role in facilitating this transition. Stay updated on any government schemes or recommendations for upgrading your heating system as hydrogen becomes more widely available.

If you’re considering future-proofing your heating system, you might want to investigate hydrogen-ready boilers or keep an eye on developments in hydrogen technology.

We partner with Vaillant boilers, they have a good range of hydrogen ready boilers that we have now been installing for a few years.  Get in contact for a free of charge quote.
